Career and Family Support Center

2017

ACTION

On a social level, the financial crisis is still a considerable threat to social cohesion and the everyday life of many Greek families, since it challenges their ability to both meet their financial needs and manage the tensions that arise within the family, which have an impact on the relationship between the members and their psychological/emotional balance
Consequently, a large part of the population, which now includes families of low-to-medium income, is trapped in the vicious circle of poverty and social isolation.
Taking these circumstances into account, the interventions attempted by private charitable organizations, the European Union and the Greek state, which aim to provide either financial relief with the provision of material goods (eg. feeding programs, emergency rent assistance) or short-term counseling services, are proven to be ineffective in practice. This is because not only do they not address the fundamental issue of employment, but they also run the risk of putting the families into a permanent state of welfare dependence, removing any motivation on their part to take an active stance.

Considering all the above, the “Captain Vassilis and Carmen Constantakopoulos” Foundation supports the initiative of the SOS Children’s Villages for the operation of a Career and Family Support Center in the area of Messinia.
